  • Beth Hart official website

    Sunday 19 July 21u45 - 23u15 USA

It’s simply amazing that Beth Hart isn’t better known today: his lady from Los Angeles has been advancing her singing career for more than 20 years and has been compared on numerous occasions with Janis Joplin and Etta James. Two great names in the world of blues, both of them gifted singers with lacerating voices and famous for their intense live performances. The path that Beth took, like that of the other two grand dames, was not always strewn with roses, but little by little she found herself and five years ago, she was discovered by Joe Bonamassa. She sang with him on a number on his record and later they recorded two full studio albums, “Don’t Explain” and “Seesaw”.

They have brought out a brand new album and the reviews are almost unanimously positive: Beth is famous for her penetrating songs, often about her own life and she has an ability to package these lyrics into a combination of soul and blues. Anyone who has seen Beth live is immediately impressed and not just by her appearance. It was high time therefore that we invited her to be the closing act of this edition, a place that she has well and truly earned: Top of The Bill!

    Sunday 19 July 19u45 - 21u15 UK

Here in Peer we have a reputation to preserve: we know how and where to find the big names from our musical past so that you get to see them performing yet again. This year, we chose Eric Burdon, a man who has performed on many battlefronts. Today he is 74 and has a family tree that will make you dizzy: The Animals, War…names that are part of a major chapter in the history book of pop music. Everyone knows his major hits such as “House of The Rising Sun”, “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood”, “We Gotta Get Out Of This Place”,”It’s My Life”, “Don’t Bring Me Down”, “San Franciscan Nights”… all numbers recorded by Eric with The Animals. One of his hits with War was “Spill The Wine”. Eric then disappeared from sight, but continued making records. He worked with Alexis Korner, Jimmy Witherspoon, the Blues Knights for example. And for the past six years he has also been touring a lot, mainly in Western Europe and in 2013 the CD “Till Your River Runs Dry” was included by a host of different music magazines in their end of the year listings.

It’s not every day that we get someone here who is member of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame, but Eric Burdon is one of them and we are very proud to have him here. Anyone who has seen him performing live recently has nothing but praise for him.

    Sunday 19 July 18u00 - 19u15 BE

Some bands travel far and wide on their musical journey and are taken into the hearts of lots of people. Sarah and Gert Bettens’ band is that kind of band. Ever since they took Flanders and the Netherlands by storm 20 years ago, with their unusual mix of rock and pop, we have had a giant soft spot for them. They came across a few obstacles on their way, but one thing that no-one can deny is that this brother and sister duo refuses to produce songs if they don’t feel that they are good enough. If they think it’s time to step back a while and to busy themselves with other things in life than music, they withdraw for a few years and come back later on reborn.

Their latest comeback was actually about five years ago, but it is only since the beginning of this year that the band is completely back together again. There is an amazing new rock album full of tight songs and when you see them live you realise that they are ready to take off again. K’s Choice live shows have a reputation of ending up in a giant party and there’s no sign of any change this time around. These people have a finely tuned routine and put on a very slick show. Their older work features enough relatively well-known songs to fill several collector’s albums and will probably also help to keep the party, started by The Scabs, going for a few more hours.

Today is our national holyday and we cannot finish it better than with a few strong Belgian acts.
Admiral Freebee, alias Tom Van Laere was here already in 2005 and 2010 and twice he succeeded effortless in convincing even the most sceptical visitors. Following the arithmetic series, the Admiral should only have to make his appearance next year, but what do you want? The man just released a very nice new CD, and we could not resist the call of “The Great Scam”, as the record is named. Seldom was the title of a record chosen worse. No scam at all, on the contrary: raw rock songs with an undiluted blues feeling: that is what is presented here. An absolute welcome return of one of our better songwriters.

    Sunday 19 July 14u45 - 15u45 USA

We have finally lured him here – Preston Shannon. He has been around for almost forty years creating and fine-tuning a sort of soul-blues and yet he was only discovered in the mid nineties by Ron Levy and given a record contract. The advantage was that he got the chance to train to become a fabulous guitarist, who by playing a lot of live shows, had built up a cast-iron reputation. The records that he brought out since then have stood all the test of time. Shannon always plays accompanied by brass. His raw deep-fried soul-blues heart needs this and it is also what makes him unique. Today, he is the irrefutable King of Beale Street in Memphis. Thanks to his voice, that is similar to that of Otis Redding and Bobby Womack combined with his special easy-to-dance-to songs and his razor-sharp arrangements, Preston has attracted a very wide network of true fans and we are extremely proud to welcome him this year.

An exceptional talent, one of the few really true bluesmen.

Here again an easy choice. Not only has Richard Van Bergen been one of our guests on numerous occasions in all kinds of groups and accompanying roles, but when he brought out his debut album with his new band, he seduced us in a trice. Richard has had his share of misfortune: a studio that burned down and above all friend and band member Dick Wagenveld who died while they were playing… you have to be very immune not to go stark raving mad from this. Richard transformed this tragedy into a raw, unsettling set of songs that are expressed so deeply that no-one can remain indifferent to them. Add to this his amazingly varied way of playing his guitar and the outstanding talent of the drummer Jody Van Ooijen – he was here ten years ago with The Strikes- and bass player Roelof Klijn – of King Mo among others – and you’ve got an amazing band!

This was the easiest decision for our programmer: this home-grown musician simply had to be part of the programme. He more than earned his place on the poster thanks to years of work in the shadows, followed by lots, and we mean lots of live performances that get better and better by the day. Today is the great leap forward therefore: if you have not yet seen Tim at work, you will now understand that you have been missing something all this time. Those who have already seen Tim perform will realise that he never stops getting better. He is no longer a man with a guitar, but now surrounded by three top musicians.

We can also imagine that people will ask where the blues is in the music of this small Grand Dame, Melissa Etheridge. They are perhaps people who have never seen this American woman live. Of course it’s true she is actually a rock star, but as you perhaps already know, rock was a child of the blues and there’s no mistaking this when you see Melissa’s live shows. It’s hard to believe, but Melissa has been delighting audiences with her shows for almost 30 years. She has won several Grammy Awards and has a jaw-droppingly brilliant repertoire behind her featuring a good dozen albums of songs she wrote herself. Melissa’s live reputation has not budged a centimetre: she draws out some of her numbers for up to about ten minutes. One example is “Like The Way I Do”.

This will be a memorable concert, because Melissa never goes for less: people have to be packed in and go home happy. And so it will be!

  • Emmylou Harris & Rodney Crowell official website

    Saturday 18 July 19u45 - 21u15 USA

Dame Emmylou was given the gift of the most beautiful voice in the world of music; she could even sing the telephone directory if needed, and the result would be totally authentic. This is the very best of country (the white man’s blues) music. Emmylou, the outstanding star has a good dozen Grammy Awards to her name and a whole slew of albums that an average singer could only dream of. She was the muse of Gram Parsons and was around when the concept of country-rock first emerged. She made her solo debut shortly thereafter in 1975. More recently, she made “Old Yellow Moon” and “The Travelling Kind” with Rodney Crowell, a long-time partner-in-crime. All in all, not counting collectors’ albums, around 30 LPs and CDs, in addition to joint ventures with Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, Elvis Costello, Mark Knopfler and … Admiral Freebee.

Rodney Crowell was a guitarist in Emmylou’s Hot Band for three years, but is known above all as a song writer. His numbers are covered by some of the greatest names in music: from his ex father-in-law Johnny Cash to Waylon Jennings and Crystal Gayle to Bob Seger. He received an infinite number of Award Nominations. Together they make a completely unique duo: the singer songwriter par excellence and the singer among all singers.

Our programmer demonstrates great taste in this choice and we are pretty sure that you will hear no mention of “You call this the blues?” at the end of the evening.

David William Kearney, alias Guitar Shorty, is 75 and has been a leading figure in the world of blues and bluesrock for almost 60 years. And his nickname is no random choice; his guitar playing is not just his trademark it is above all highly recognisable and infallible. He was a band member with Ray Charles, toured the States as a guitarist with Sam Cooke and is married to Jimi Hendrix’s half sister: that gives you an immediate idea where he gets his amazing experience from. Hell, there are not too many who can lay claim to that kind of background. He won a W.C. Handy Award for “My Way Or The Highway” that he recorded in 1991 with Otis Grand which resulted in immediate renewed interest in him and his guitar in the States.

He has come out with new albums since he was 25, but it is above all the live shows that are still daringly outrageous. Expect to hear his own work, but equally “Voodoo Chile” or “Hey Joe”. A concert that will have many salivating because his visits to Europe are rare and far between to say the least.

This trio of unusual English musicians performs in a classic power rock setting and creates music that can also be described as world music. This is because of their rather unusual selection of instruments, but above all the broad approach to melodies and rhythms. Blues and rock are the mainstays, but they also produce some good soul and funk. Wille’s slide play is not just snazzy; it is original and particularly melodious. You may have already seen them at Rockpalast, they have toured with Deep Purple; Joe Bonamassa is a fan of theirs as is Francis Rossi of Status Quo. Mighty impressive reference.

If there is one artist who has left his mark over the past ten years on the blues world, it is Ian Siegal, the man with the fabulously croaky voice and his slide guitar. If our calculations are correct, this is the fifth time he has featured on our poster and that is fully justified in our opinion. Every time he was here before, he played sets that vast numbers of visitors remembered for a long time to come. This time he is coming without his friends from the Mississippi Delta, and will be alone with his own band. Last year, Ian came out with three stunning CDs and we would not be disappointed if his set featured a good collection of tracks from “Live In Amsterdam”. Can you imagine seeing with your own eyes how Ian and gifted guitarist Dusty Ciggaar will blow new life into Tom Russel’s “Gallo del Cielo”? But even if that track doesn’t make it into the collection for the set, we already know that the first evening will end in style and that a great number of you will head back to your car or campsite humming along to “Buelah Land”. So, you thought the Belgian blues scene had died a death? Well we have news for you to the contrary: earlier in the evening we had Sugaree and now we have Little Hook, the band created by the ex-TEE bass player Renaud Lesire from Liège. Together with “Big Dave” Reniers (vocals and harmonica), old warrior Steve “Dynamite” Wouters (yes, from Last Call) and a relative newcomer Bart Mulders they travel through the land of the real blues.

Still (far too) unknown; but that won’t last long, because these guys have seriously got the bug. A giant baptism of fire for a young band full of experienced old hands: that’s what you’ll also find in Peer on Friday!

Steven van der Nat, that’s Little Steve’s official name, has been making music with his mates in The Big Beat for the past three years and during this time he has become a very good singer/guitarist, who interweaves a whole lot of soul into his blues. In the past few years, the band members have accompanied an Americans on a European tour and to put it in their own words – that’s a great way to learn. They also picked up a lot of tips about style from locally well-known bands such as C.C. Jerome’s Jetsetters, The Backbones and The Electrophonics, which was all grist to the mill. Who can doubt the logic of this choice therefore?
