How evident can it be for Blues Peer when you come to think of it? We celebrate our thirtieth anniversary on our national holiday, and therefore it is pure logics that we invite Belgium’s number one, isn’t it? It surely is when you know that he has to blow out 65 candles as well.
Le Chevalier Arno was our guest before, in 2007. They who witnessed this surely remember the quite special scenes that sprang up afterwards in the streets around our festival grounds. In other words, this is the perfect end: he 65, we 30. Arno is, except himself, especially the über-performer of belly music aka The Blues. In his Charles pose or as himself, everything turns into blues when he charges into battle in his Ostend-Belgian self.
This year our marathon lasts four days, but what better way to finish the festivities more dignified and Belgian than with this national institute! O la lala, Putain Putain, c’est vachement bien, nous sommes quand-même tous des Européens !

Today is our national holyday and we cannot finish it better than with a few strong Belgian acts.
Admiral Freebee, alias Tom Van Laere was here already in 2005 and 2010 and twice he succeeded effortless in convincing even the most sceptical visitors. Following the arithmetic series, the Admiral should only have to make his appearance next year, but what do you want? The man just released a very nice new CD, and we could not resist the call of “The Great Scam”, as the record is named. Seldom was the title of a record chosen worse. No scam at all, on the contrary: raw rock songs with an undiluted blues feeling: that is what is presented here. An absolute welcome return of one of our better songwriters.

This is not the first time we offer you Malian blues, but we really have been waiting since many years for this blind Malian couple.
For world-music fans their names have over time become common knowledge, the others had better listen and look closely because the Bamako version of the blues such as presented by Amadou and Mariam is simply irresistible, as is proven by the seven CD’s they released up to now.
Much more needn’t be said: the music itself says it all, but still this: after you have seen this duo, nobody will ever have to explain to you that the roots of blues must be sought and found in Africa.

It has been a full ten years since The Man in Black left us… His musical legacy remains fully standing however and that is being proven by Clive John, who gathered a band that gives true justice to Johnny’s music. We do know that there are many tribute bands around, but this English set is the only one that meets with the full approval of the Cash family, and that is why we are glad to post the first cover band ever on our billboard.
When Clive puts himself in the shoes of Johnny, you don’t know what you see and hear: the resemblance is really weird. Who ever saw the man life, will gladly let himself flow along. The other will afterwards only realise what exactly they missed all this time….

There are few words left unspoken about this phenomenon. Sturdy and still original in his seventies, Seasick Steve pours out his music of homemade guitars. Expect no classic six strings, but a fresh and pure blues sound of this late blooming artist. He made about seven records in the last decade and frequently performed throughout Europe on small and big festivals, except on the stage of Blues Peer. This year the ‘Man from another Time’ will finally take our stage to bring a pure form of blues. Look out for ‘Doghouse Music’, a song he vocally brings in his own way: raw and gentle.

Again a name that we just love to see make his return on our field. He was among us at our very first edition, then again with The Fabulous Thunderbirds. He made his appearance with his own band here in 1999 as well. Jimmie is a super guitarist who masters roots-rock and blues to perfection and who showcased on his latest record a broad range of his favourite tunes. Carlos Santana, Bob Dylan and B.B. King at times called upon his string proficiency, something that makes you think, just admit it….
Jimmie plays already thirty-five years at the highest level, over twenty records bear his hallmark and he is the elder brother of the sadly missed SRV, whom he taught the first principles of the guitarist profession. Such a person deserves to be given a place in the limelight, same as you deserve to see him at work once again. Texas in all its musical formats, that is what Jimmie and his band offer you.

Blues Peer has a patent on this kind of package deals as well, although it was quite some time since we had this kind of act about the house: a very select club of representatives of the real Chicago Blues makes the big crossing to give us a history lesson. Billy Boy Arnold, Billy Branch, John Primer, Carlos Johnson and Lurrie Bell are five of the real legatees of the Chicago blues and their back-up band is stuffed to the brim with musicians that over the years left their hallmark on the music of the Windy City. Simply expect the reinvention of the music that we are all so desperately devoted to, a kind of jukebox filled with live performances of the tracks that made this genre so big.

Another happy return… still a completely unknown then, Guy Forsyth opened twenty years ago our tenth edition and he was our guest in 2006 as well. These concerts stuck in the mind of many among us, and it rang a logical bell to invite this master guitar player again now. He plays a pretty mean slide on string thick as telephone cables, he masters the singing saw as few others can and he is on top of all that a very ingratiating personality who also plays a
leading part in The Asylum Street Spankers. His ninth record is called “The Freedom To Fail”, but we feel pretty sure he won’t live up to that title. This is Texan Blues and Americana in all its shapes and forms and at the highest possible level. Time for another hour of party-time.

We personally know some people that jumped up with joy when they saw this name on our bill. We fully understand them, because this little lady with the huge vocal cords figured in fact already since years on our wishing list.
Nikki originates from the American state North Carolina; she learned to sing – as should be – in the church choir and later engaged more worldly genres such as roots-rock, rockabilly and rhythm & blues. This resulted in a first EP in mid-2012 and after its release, there was no stopping her. A bunch of concerts followed and over and over again she left her public open-mouthed: rarely experienced such a whirlwind. Meanwhile the first full CD is a fact and she teamed up with unsurpassed Deke Dickerson. Now Nikki – her husband by the way plays the guitar – is really ripe for a public such as ours. You had better protect your neck though, a Nikki Hill concert is sometimes said to be a “whiplash-moment”.

Our programmer would not really be our programmer if he would not treat us to a Scandinavian sweet once again. These lads who straightforwardly developed into specialists in all styles of blues come all the way from Swedish Karlstad. The fact that they were asked to represent their country at the European Blues Challenge, was therefore pretty evident. That we would spot them over there was really as evident. They released one record, but that one is more than sufficient to deserve a place at this festive edition. Time to Boogie!

Sometimes, very rarely, one can see thing coming from afar. That The Bluesbones would figure on our bill was one of those things. When in 2012 they snapped up the price of the public at the Belgian Blues Challenge, the warning light started flashing, but when a year later they let loose their live-cd “@ The Bosuil” on the world, is became inevitable. The reason is that you are entitled to a portion of unalloyed blues-rock on a Sunday afternoon. That still is the best way to shake off the dust and the hangover from your clothes and body. Two guitarists-extraordinaire, a genuine rhythm tandem and a singer who can really sing a song… admit it, what else do you need to wake up to?

Sometimes it is better to shut up and let things do their own talking. In the case of these toppers from East LA this is very much the case. Forty years on the road catapulted this band into the absolute world top, and you must have live deep in the jungle not to be able to cite at least ten of their hits off the cuff.
The Wolves were our guests for the first time ten years ago in 1993, and twelve years later they joined us again and twice they knocked everybody over in our tent. That they could not be lacking at this year’s party is sheer logic. Their thrilling musical oeuvre meanwhile smoothly covers twenty records and their life reputation is known worldwide. Whether they go for straightforward roots-rock or dive deep into their norteno-roots, whether they choose to go experimental such as in their Latin Playboys project or just shoot off their “Greatest Hits” at us, we know for sure that we will all go into the night singing and dancing. This really is not “just another Band from East LA”, this is absolute world top class, combining hits with unequalled originality.

In the gallery of special guitarists this Louisiana man, the “King of Slideco” ranks very high. When he released his first album almost thirty-four years ago, we here in Europe did not believe our ears: that squelchy, fat slide-sound reminded us of nothing else we knew, and soon it showed to be the result of the material Sony used and of his special way of playing, the so-called behind the slide technique. That originality brought him touring work with the late Clifton Chenier, in whose Zydecoband he was the only white man, with John Mayall, and especially with John Hiatt, with whom he was many years one of The Goners.
You can hear his guitar on tens of records, from Little Feat and Gov’t Mule up to Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, John Hiatt and Johnny Winter.
Ten years ago he stood on this stage as well. That was a festive edition in its time, same as it is now again. For this reason we once more serve you a nice caldron of swampblues.

Unbelievable how time flies, even though it sometimes seems different. Thirteen years ago, the then very young Serbian guitarist who had just released her first record, took her first steps on our big podium. We remember some of the comments made: “wrong choice”, “she doesn’t feel the blues” and more similar niceties.
Today it shows how right we were: Ana travels around the globe and time after time she imposes her will on her audience. From Brazil to the States, from London to Buenos Aires, everywhere blues lovers eat out of her hand. The reason is among other things that over the years and thanks to the many concerts, she grew into being part of the top club of blues guitarists (m/v) on this planet. Since many years she does not need the label “feminine” to be taken seriously among the very greatest. After six records and almost fifteen years this cannot be seen as a gimmick anymore, neither as a coincidence. No, Ana Popovic has bit by bit grown to be a world topper, and we gladly let her prove it once again.

Talking happy returns! Dave Gonzales and his buddies were our guests for the first time exactly 25 years ago, and now that they are in the midst of their reunion tour in the US, it was pretty inevitable that we would fly over the band from San Diego to Peer once more. Not that we had to really beg: The Paladins were here in 1999 and in 2011 as well, meaning that they know the house. And the house knows them, and knows what they can do and what to expect: their own personal stew of blues, roots-rock, rockabilly, country and rock ‘n’ roll that granted the band the epithet “one of America’s hardest working live bands”.
They are at it for almost thirty years now, but there is no wear and tear visible: if you ask us, time did stand still for some years and do not mind that there were no new album releases. That will surely come, but not before we enjoyed, again, a fine hour of Paladins “for old times’ sake”.

She was one of the members of the “Chicago Women of the Blues” tour and today she is here with us together with her band Soul Gift. Surrounded by grand people such as Alex Schulz and Raphael Wressnig she will prove that the many nominations for all kinds of Blues Awards from the USA, via UK to France and Japan were no real surprises. Even if she is only 28, this Birmingham Brit seems to be one of the true values of present-day white blues for quite a while now. She is at her fourth CD in hardly six years, she toured almost incessantly, and she is one of the favourites of both Dave Stewart and Stevie Wonder.
Her British Blues Awards can hardly be counted anymore and she cannot even come close to counting all the concerts she played, but that is what makes Joanne what she is today: a passionate, true guitar player with a highly personal sound that makes her almost immediately recognizable among all other musicians.

Just for the record: some people claim that we stage almost every year a Dutch band in an attempt to keep our northern neighbour visitors on our side. Wrong! If we invite almost every year one or more Dutch bands to Peer, we only do so because we truly like them. Now, that clears the sky.
With Stackhouse the fact is that we do not just “like” them, no, we highly, and rather very highly esteem this band of three generations. The reason is among many other things that we have a soft spot for the guitar-playing of Willem Van Dullemen, who we already staged with his band Tip On In during our very first edition. As should, the rhythm tandem of drummer Bert Post and bass player Fred Van Unen is the backbone of the band and they are at the same time the transition gate between the generations: youths Machiel Meijers and Emiel van Pelt are some of the talents that come rushing in and will soon be on top of white blues. Meijers loves the two Walters, van Pelt wished he had grown up in Chicago during the fifties. You know what to expect: old and new, young and old. This means you’ll have to get up early on Saturday!
